Abstract
The number of offenders with mental illness in the community continues to grow, and the role of the police as gatekeepers in the community is critical. However, there are few empirical studies on police officers working with people with mental illness. This study aimed to explore the experiences (number of contacts and incidents of violence) and perceptions (attitudes, difficulties, confidence) of police officers regarding individuals with mental illness, as well as to examine the effects of these factors on officer burnout.
A questionnaire was conducted with 205 police officers, and the impact of their experiences and perceptions on burnout was investigated through regression analysis.
The results showed that police officers have a high frequency of contact with people with mental illness, averaging between 1 to 2 to 3 times a month. Furthermore, they reported experiencing violence, on average, once a month. Additionally, the majority of respondents displayed a negative attitude and encountered difficulties when dealing with individuals with mental illness. Lastly, negative attitudes, work difficulties, and self-confidence related to working with people with mental illness significantly influenced police officer burnout.
Practice and policy implications were discussed.
